David levinthal is a photographer who lives and works in New York. He has produced a diverse oeuvre, utilising primarily large format polaroid photography. His work touches upon many aspects of American culture from Barbie to baseball to x-rated dolls. He uses small toys and props with dramatic lighting to construct mini enviroments of subject matters varying from war scenes to voyeurism to racial and political references to American pop culture.

Levinthal creates miniature scenarios using shoeboxes, cardboard, and foam core to make miniature offices, hotel rooms, pool halls etc… Levinthal is particularly interested in exploring the different emotions that each scene produces.

With the use of skilled photography, Levinthal animates his small toys, sometimes to the point of artificially created movement. The subjects of Levinthal’s work, the toys and dolls themselves are often confused with real live ambiguity found in this dialectic between artificiality and reality.

Sophie Calle

Sophie Calle born in 1953 is a french writer, photographer, instillation artist and conceptual artist. Calle’s work is distinguished by its use of arbitrary sets of constraints and evokes the french literary movement of the 1960s known as oulipo. Her work frequently depicts human vulnerabililty and examines identity and intimacy. She is recognised for her detective like ability to follow strangers and investigate their private lives. Her photographic work often includes panels of text of her own writing.

She is fascinated by the interface between our public lives and our private selves. This has led her to investigate patterns of behaviour using techniques akin to those of a private investigator, a psychologist or a forensic scientist. It has also led her to investigate her own behaviour so that her life, as lived and as imagined has informed many of her most interesting work.

Lori Nix

Lori Nix is an artist who bends the line between truth and illusion in her photographs. she accomplishes this by photographing minitures and models which illuminate her interest in the disaster movies of the 1970s and her memories of growning up in Kansas. Her photographs of epic scenes of destruction and grandeur are all highly detailed small table tops dioramas that are playful and dark. She does not do any digital manipulation within the scenes. Everything that takes place in the photograph is built by hand and she does not fix any of it using photoshop to make it look more real.

In her series titled ‘Accidentally Kansas’ she creates scenes of floods, tornadoes, snow storms, lighting strikes and all epics and defining events recalled from her formative years in rural Kansas. In her most recent work Lori Nix has left Kansas behind as a subject although in her new work depictions of disaster are still prominent as she has begun to explore situations that are as eerie and ominous as her former work was clear and present.

Over the past thirty years the constructed photograph has become an integral voice in the dialogue of contemporary photography.

Macro photography

This is a pic that a took a while back of a lemon. In this picture I wanted to show the pattern and design of the inside of a lemon.

Macro photography is close up photography. The definition is that the image projected is close to the same size as the subject. In recent years the term macro has been used in marketing material to mean being able to focus on a subject close enough so that when a regular 6×4 inch print is made, the image is life size or larger. With digital cameras the actual size is rarely stated, so that the magnification ratio is largely irrelevent.

DEPTH OF FIELD WITHIN PRODUCING A MACRO IMAGE!

Limited depth of field is an important consideration in macro photography. This makes it essential to focus critically on the most important part of the subject, because if an element is even a millimetre closer or further from the focal plane might be blurred. Due to this, the use of microscope stage a highly recommended for precise focus with large magnification such as photographing skin cells. Compact digital cameras and small sensors bridge cameras have an incidental advantage in macro photography due to inherently higher working distance.

LIGHTING WITHIN MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY!

The problem of sufficiently and even lighting the subject can be difficult to overcome. Some cameras can focus on subjects so close that they touch the front of the lens. It is impossible to place a light between the camera and a subject that close, making it extreme close up photography impractical. Ring flashers, with flush tubes arranged in a circle around the front of the lens, can be helpful in lighting at close distances.
